A Gen Z’s Guide to Raising Screen-Free Kids: What We Played, and Why It Still

Today, everything a child wants is just a tap away, within the glowing frame of a screen. But there was a time, not too long ago, when smartphones were rare and primarily seen as a tool for adults to communicate. Back then, kids didn’t see phones as entertainment devices. A child growing up in that era, still part of Gen Z, had a childhood rooted in experiences, not apps.

Summer holidays were the highlight of our year, not just because school was out, but because they meant pure joy and freedom. They weren’t about binge-watching shows or endless scrolling; they were about playing outdoor games, spending time with cousins, visiting grandparents, and creating memories that had nothing to do with screens.

Those months were filled with mangoes and litchis plucked straight from trees, learning life lessons from our grandparents, and playing games that kept us active, social, and engaged. This screen-free childhood helped us develop imagination, patience, and deep-rooted family bonds.

If you're wondering how to reduce screen time for kids today, look no further than what a child in 2010 used to do without digital distractions. As a Gen Z who experienced a low-tech, fun-filled upbringing, here are some Gen Z parenting tips that blend nostalgia with modern practicality.

1. Taking Your Child to Their Grandparents

One of the most cherished parts of our childhood was visiting our grandparents during the summer holidays. It wasn’t just a trip, it was an experience. From waking up early for walks with Grandpa to enjoying delicious, homemade meals from Grandma, those visits created memories for a lifetime.

Children today miss out on this because of busy schedules or digital distractions. But taking them to spend time with their grandparents can give them a glimpse into a slower, more connected way of living. Let them explore village life, climb trees, play with cousins, and hear stories from the past. It’s not just refreshing, it’s grounding.

2. Introducing Them to New Games

Before smartphones and tablets ruled our lives, we had games that required no screens, just imagination, friends, and a little space.

Games like Seven Stones (Satoliya), where one team knocks down a pile of flat stones with a ball and tries to rebuild it before getting hit, were thrilling and full of team spirit. These games helped us learn teamwork, strategy, and resilience before those ad-filled YouTube videos.

Introduce these to your kids. You’ll be surprised how quickly they’ll get hooked once they understand the rules and experience the excitement.

3. Teaching Household Chores

Our parents made sure we learned essential life skills early. Cooking simple meals, cleaning our rooms, and washing clothes, it was a part of growing up. We didn’t resist it; in fact, we enjoyed being treated like responsible members of the house.

Today, many kids view chores as boring or unnecessary. But with the right approach, you can turn them into fun, confidence-building activities. Start small and make it engaging—let them stir the batter, fold laundry, or help set the table. These tasks not only reduce screen dependency but also teach responsibility.

4. Taking Them to Different Places

Travel during vacations was about exploration, not about luxury. We visited new places, especially those with historical or cultural significance. These trips were more educational than any textbook and far more fun.

Parents today can follow the same approach. Plan trips to forts, museums, ancient towns, or heritage sites. Let your child experience history beyond screens and stories. These outings offer a fresh environment, stimulate curiosity, and most importantly, pull them away from devices.

Raising screen-free kids today may feel like a challenge, but it's completely possible and rewarding. As a Gen Z who grew up without constant screens, I can confidently say that low-tech fun, creative games, and real-world experiences still work.

It's not about cutting off tech completely, but about creating a balance and ensuring that childhood is as rich offline as it is online. Give your children what we had—a screen-free childhood filled with memories they’ll carry with them forever. Start with small changes, be consistent, and lead by example. Because sometimes, the best parenting tips come from looking back at what worked so well for us.
