The Hidden Traps Behind ‘Innocent’ Games Like Roblox and Candy Crush

Pegasus Society - Awareness Post

The other day, my 11-year-old came to me excitedly talking about Roblox.
“Mom, it’s a creative game. You can build things and play with friends; it’s good!”

For a moment, I wanted to smile and agree. After all, isn’t creativity something we always want to encourage in our children? But as someone who has been working with parents and child psychologists through Pegasus Society, I couldn’t take that reassurance at face value. I decided to look deeper.

What I found was worrying.

Roblox, at first glance, does look like a platform for creativity. Yet because it is an open platform, children are also exposed to strangers whose language and behavior cannot be controlled. Even if one game seems safe, the larger environment is not. The risks of inappropriate exposure, unsafe conversations, and hidden manipulations are very real.

And Roblox is not the only one. Candy Crush and similar games are often brushed off as harmless fun. But these games are built around a dopamine loop, the brain’s reward chemical. The flashing lights, the little “wins,” and the constant lure of “just one more level”: all of it is carefully designed to keep players hooked. For children, whose brains are still developing, this is not just play. It is conditioning.

As parents, we often see only the surface: creativity, fun, and friends. But underneath, these games are engineered with mechanisms that can lead to addiction, frustration, and even a distorted sense of social interaction.

Over the past months, in countless conversations with parents, I have seen a common pattern. Children present these games as “good,” while parents feel unsure. And that is the reality. It is confusing. Which is why awareness is our strongest shield.

Before we say yes to a game, let us spend ten minutes understanding what lies behind it. Let us talk to other parents. Let us ask questions, not just to our children, but also to ourselves: Is this game shaping my child’s mind in the way I truly want?

These are the very questions I keep returning to, both as a mother and in my work with Pegasus Society. In conversations with psychologists and parents, I have seen how much clarity and confidence grow once we begin to understand what is really happening behind the screen. That is what our initiative stands for: creating awareness, building community, and helping families reclaim childhood from addictive loops.

When parents are equipped with the right knowledge, they can guide their children toward freedom, creativity, and joy: the kind that no app or game can ever replace.
